About Feroz Shah Kotla Fort
Feroz Shah Kotla Fort is one of the oldest structures in New Delhi. It was built back in 1354 AD by a ruler named Sultan Feroz Shah Tughlaq. The reason behind building this fort is quite interesting. You see, Sultan Feroz Shah Tughlaq needed to move his capital from Tughlaqabad to Firozabad because there wasn’t enough water at the old capital. So, he decided to set up this fort by the banks of the Yamuna River to solve the water problem.
Inside the fort, you’ll find some really nice gardens, beautiful mosques, and even palaces. The entrance to the fort is pretty impressive with a big iron gate that has the ruler’s name on it. The fort’s walls are super tall, reaching up to 15 meters!
Now, even though some parts of the fort have crumbled over time, there’s a stepwell, which is basically a well with steps, that’s still in good shape. One cool thing about this fort is that it houses an Ashokan Pillar, brought all the way from Ambala to Delhi. This pillar stands at 13 meters tall and has inscriptions on it that contain teachings from Ashoka, an ancient Indian emperor.
